$5.00

Calochortus luteus, commonly known as Yellow Mariposa Lily, is a striking native perennial bulb found across coastal and inland California, from grasslands and chaparral to oak woodlands and serpentine slopes. Known for its brilliant golden-yellow, tulip-shaped flowers, this species is a true icon of California spring wildflower displays.
Yellow Mariposa Lily typically grows 12 to 24 inches tall, with narrow grass-like leaves that emerge in winter and die back as the plant blooms. From April through June, each unbranched stem bears 1 to several large, cup-shaped flowers with bright yellow petals often adorned with maroon or reddish spots near the base and delicate fringed hairs inside. These blooms provide nectar and pollen for native bees and other insects.
This drought-tolerant species thrives in full sun and well-drained soils, especially sandy or gravelly slopes. It is well-suited to dry native gardens, rock gardens, and bulb meadows, where it can naturalize over time. Best sown in fall to mimic natural winter moisture cycles. Allow the soil to dry in summer to accommodate its dormancy.
