Nemophila menziesii is a beloved California native annual wildflower commonly known as baby blue eyes. Found naturally in the Sierra foothills, coastal ranges, and grasslands throughout the state, it’s a springtime favorite for wildflower meadows, shady garden beds, and native groundcovers. It thrives in well-drained soils and is especially tolerant of part shade, making it a versatile choice for gardens with dappled light or morning sun. Sow in fall or early spring for the best floral display.
This low-growing, spreading herb forms soft mounds of bright green, lobed foliage. In spring, it produces a carpet of delicate sky-blue flowers, each with a white center and gently scalloped petals. The blooms measure about 2–3 centimeters wide and appear in abundance, creating a dreamy blue haze when planted en-masse.
A key player in pollinator gardens, baby blue eyes provides nectar and pollen for native bees and early-season butterflies. It’s also a favorite with hoverflies and other beneficial insects. With its soft color palette and gentle growth habit, Nemophila menziesii is perfect for edging, underplanting, or tucking between stepping stones. While not typically grown for cut flowers, it’s lovely in small, casual bouquets.
