Sisyrinchium californicum is a perennial wildflower known by the common names Yellow-Eyed Grass, Golden-Eyed Grass, and Golden Blue-Eyed Grass. Despite the “grass” in its name, it is not a true grass — it belongs to the Iris family. Native along the West Coast from California north into British Columbia, it naturally grows in moist places, especially near the coast, including meadows, seeps, wetland edges, and other seasonally damp habitats.
This charming native forms tidy clumps of narrow, iris-like leaves topped with cheerful yellow flowers. The blooms are small but bright, often marked with darker veining, and look especially lovely planted along path edges, rain garden margins, moist meadow plantings, or in containers that do not dry out too hard. It prefers full sun to part shade, with more shade useful in hotter inland gardens. It thrives in moist coastal locations, grows about 6 inches to 1.5 feet tall, blooms from spring into summer, and can reseed readily in favorable conditions.
Best sown in fall to early winter in mild California climates, allowing cool-season moisture to help germination. Keep seed trays or seedbeds evenly moist until established. Unlike many dryland California natives, Yellow-Eyed Grass appreciates regular moisture and is a good choice for the wetter edges of a native garden, rain garden, or seasonally moist meadow.
