White Sage | Salvia apiana
White Sage seeds.
Salvia apiana, commonly known as White Sage, is a perennial shrub native to Southern California and parts of Baja California. Revered for its silvery-white foliage and tall flowering spikes, it is an essential plant in many dry, coastal sage scrub habitats. Known for its use in traditional practices and valued by pollinators, especially native bees and hummingbirds, White Sage thrives in full sun and well-drained, sandy or rocky soils. Once established, it is highly drought-tolerant and aromatic. This woody sage can reach impressive sizes in the wild, forming a rounded shrub with upright stems bearing pale lavender to white flowers. Its resinous leaves are intensely fragrant, especially in the heat of the day. White Sage prefers hot, dry summers and mild winters, and may go dormant in extreme drought. Avoid overhead watering and do not overwater after seedlings are established.
