Penstemon spectabilis, or Showy Penstemon, lives up to its name with striking spikes of tubular flowers in vivid shades of lavender-blue to purple, making it a favorite among native plant enthusiasts and hummingbird lovers alike. This perennial beauty is native to Southern and Baja California and naturally occurs on dry slopes, chaparral, and coastal sage scrub. Ideal for sunny gardens with well-draining soil, it thrives with little to no supplemental water once established. A real showstopper in the garden, especially when planted en masse.
This fast-growing perennial typically grows to 4 feet tall and forms a bushy clump of upright stems lined with lance-shaped, gray-green leaves. The tall flower stalks bloom from late spring into early summer, attracting hummingbirds, native bees, and butterflies with their abundant nectar.
