Serpentine Sunflower | Helianthus bolanderi
Bring a little California sunshine into the summer garden with Helianthus bolanderi, commonly known as Bolander’s Sunflower or Serpentine Sunflower. Its golden-yellow petals surround dark, richly colored centers, creating the familiar sunflower silhouette with a lovely wildflower character. Native to California and southwestern Oregon, this annual grows in grassy openings and disturbed places. Upright, hairy stems carry textured green leaves, providing a rustic backdrop for flowers that brighten the garden from summer into early fall.
Typically reaching 3–5 feet tall, Serpentine Sunflower offers height and warm color for informal flower beds and meadow-style plantings. Plant in loose groups to enjoy the repeating contrast of golden petals and dark centers. Despite its common name, it is not restricted to serpentine soils.
