Hibiscus lasiocarpos var. occidentalis is a striking perennial known as Rose Mallow and California Hibiscus. Endemic to California, it grows along freshwater marshes and riverbanks in the Central Valley and Sacramento–San Joaquin Delta. This handsome wetland plant brings a lush appearance to the garden with large, soft, hairy, heart-shaped leaves and showy white to pale pink flowers with deep crimson centers.
The tall, branching stems create an attractive backdrop for moist garden beds and pond margins. Grow in full sun with rich soil and reliable moisture throughout the growing season, including summer. Plants tolerate heavy soils and die back in winter, returning from their perennial rootstock when warmer weather arrives.
Start seeds in containers for easier moisture and temperature control. A practical approach for hard-coated hibiscus seeds is to gently abrade a small spot on the seed coat, avoiding damage to the interior, then soak overnight before sowing. Keep the growing medium consistently moist and warm.
