Point Reyes Meadowfoam | Limnanthes douglasii ssp. sulphurea
Limnanthes douglasii ssp. sulphurea is a rare subspecies of meadowfoam known by the common names Yellow Meadowfoam, Sulphur Meadowfoam or Point Reyes Meadowfoam. This charming annual wildflower is endemic to California, where it is naturally found only in a small area near Point Reyes along the central coast. It grows in moist grasslands, seeps, and seasonally wet meadows that retain moisture through spring. Prefers clay or loamy soils and full sun to part shade. Best sown in fall to take advantage of winter rains and natural cold stratification. In the garden, it brings a burst of soft yellow to vernal pools, rain gardens, or low-lying meadow areas.
This compact annual grows up to 12 inches tall, forming a low, spreading mat of finely divided green foliage. The cup-shaped flowers are about 1 inch wide, with pale yellow petals and a rich golden center, blooming in cheerful carpets through early spring. A favorite of early-season pollinators, it is especially well-suited to coastal or seasonally moist native plant gardens.
