North Coast Blue-eyed Grass | Sisyrinchium bellum 'North Coast'
North Coast Blue-Eyed Grass (Sisyrinchium bellum) Seeds.
Sisyrinchium bellum, commonly known as Blue-Eyed Grass, is a charming native perennial that brings grassy elegance and brilliant violet-blue blooms to California gardens. The “North Coast” form was selected from wild populations near Gualala, CA, and is prized for its larger flowers (up to 1.5 inches wide) and extra-long blooming season, often extending from late winter well into summer or even fall in mild climates.
Despite its name, it’s not a true grass—it’s in the iris family! This tidy, clumping plant thrives in full sun to light shade and prefers moist, well-draining soil during its active growing season however can tolerate a wide range of soils. It goes dormant in summer once soils dry out but comes back strong each year. A pollinator magnet and a tough little native that fits beautifully in wildflower meadows, borders, and containers.
