Malva assurgentiflora is a flowering shrub known by the common names Island Mallow, Mission Mallow, and Malva Rosa. Endemic to California’s Channel Islands and coastal regions, it thrives in sandy and rocky soils, making it well suited for coastal landscaping and restoration projects. This evergreen shrub is fast-growing and can reach large sizes, providing both beauty and habitat value. It is highly attractive to pollinators, including bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds.

This mallow is prized for its showy magenta to rose-purple flowers with deep veining, which bloom nearly year-round in mild climates. The flowers resemble those of hibiscus and can measure up to 3 inches across. The lush green, lobed leaves form a dense backdrop, making the plant excellent for hedges, screens, or specimen plantings. Once established, it is drought-tolerant and thrives in full sun with good drainage.
