Fivespot | Nemophila maculata
Nemophila maculata, commonly known as Five Spot, is a charming annual wildflower native to California’s Sierra Nevada foothills and Central Valley. Known for its delicate white petals each marked with a distinctive deep purple spot, Five Spot brings a whimsical and eye-catching element to spring wildflower displays. It thrives in open grassy areas, vernal pools, and lightly shaded woodland edges.
This low-growing plant typically reaches 6 to 12 inches in height, forming a lush green mat of softly lobed leaves. From March to May, it produces profuse blooms—each flower cup-shaped, about an inch across, with five white petals perfectly marked with vivid purple spots at the tips. The nectar-rich flowers attract native bees and small pollinators, making it a valuable addition to pollinator-friendly gardens.
Five Spot prefers full sun to partial shade and grows best in well-drained soils. It is well-suited to wildflower mixes, borders, containers, and naturalized plantings. For best results, sow directly in fall or early spring. Its soft, spreading habit makes it ideal for tucking between other spring bloomers.
