Madia elegans, commonly known as Common Madia or Elegant Madia, is a distinctive and aromatic annual wildflower native to California and the western United States. A member of the sunflower family (Asteraceae), this plant is known for its sticky foliage, sweet scent, and its cheerful yellow flowers that open in the morning and close by afternoon.
Growing 1 to 5 feet tall, Madia elegans has branched stems covered in glandular hairs, which give off a fruity or herbal fragrance when brushed. Its narrow, often sticky leaves spiral up the stem. From June to September, it produces bright yellow, daisy-like flowers with reddish markings at the base of the petals and a dark central disk. These blooms attract native bees, butterflies, and other pollinators, and provide crucial late-season nectar in dry habitats.
Madia elegans thrives in full sun and well-drained soils, especially in dry grasslands, chaparral, and open woodland edges. It is highly drought-tolerant and well-suited to wildflower meadows, habitat gardens, and restoration projects where summer bloom and wildlife support are desired. Sow in fall or early spring for best results.
