Sacred Datura | Datura wrightii
Want something that smells like heaven, looks like a garden goddess, and shrugs off drought like a desert boss? Sacred datura is your wild, moonlit muse!
Datura wrightii, also known as sacred datura, jimsonweed, or toloache, is a stunning California native with huge, trumpet-shaped white flowers that bloom at dusk and release a sweet, intoxicating fragrance. A favorite of moths, particularly sphinx moths, this fast-growing perennial thrives in dry, well-drained soils and is highly drought-tolerant once established. Though it’s a visual showstopper, it's also tough as nails—making it perfect for xeriscapes, wildlife gardens, and moon gardens.
This sprawling plant has large, soft gray-green leaves and can reach up to 4 feet in height and spread. It prefers full sun and minimal watering, blooming from spring through fall. All parts of this plant are toxic if ingested, so plant with care—especially around children and pets.
