$5.00

Layia platyglossa is a cheerful California native annual wildflower known by the common names Tidy Tips, Common Tidy Tips, and Coastal Tidy Tips. Native to California and Baja California, it is especially loved for its bright golden-yellow daisy-like flowers neatly edged in white, giving the bloom its tidy “paint-dipped” look. It grows naturally in sunny, open, low-elevation habitats, including grasslands, slopes, scrub, chaparral, and disturbed areas.
Tidy Tips is an easy, dependable annual for wildflower gardens, meadow plantings, borders, rock gardens, and pollinator patches. It prefers full sun and well-drained soil, including dry, poor, sandy, or loamy soils, and becomes drought tolerant once established. Plant in a mass for a beautiful spring display of yellow blooms with crisp white tips. The flowers attract bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects, while the seed heads are attractive to birds.
This compact annual typically grows about 6–24 inches tall, with narrow gray-green foliage and showy flowers held above the plant on upright stems. In mild California climates, sow in fall with the rains, or direct sow in late winter to early spring. Seeds need light for best germination, so press into the soil surface or cover only very lightly.
