Clarkia rubicunda ‘Shamini’ brings the beauty of California’s farewell-to-spring wildflowers into the garden with showy, cup-shaped blossoms in rich pink and red tones. Broad, silky petals open above slender stems and narrow green leaves, creating an airy splash of color just as many spring wildflowers are finishing their display. ‘Shamini’ is a cultivated selection of Ruby Chalice Clarkia, a species endemic to California and found mainly in the central coastal region.
An inviting addition to a pollinator garden, this annual offers visiting bees a colorful summer gathering place. Plant in generous patches among native grasses or between perennials, where its delicate-looking flowers can shine. Grow in full sun with little supplemental water once established. Sow with the arrival of fall rains in mild-winter California, allowing plants to develop through the rainy season before flowering in late spring and summer. Leave a few seed capsules to ripen for the possibility of another colorful display the following year.
