$5.00

Lobelia cardinalis, or Cardinal flower, known for its brilliant scarlet blooms, is a showy native wildflower that brings a bold splash of color to moist garden spots. Though more commonly associated with wetter regions, it can thrive in California gardens when given partial shade and consistently moist soil. Can be easily grown in a pot with bottom opening plugged. This perennial is a magnet for hummingbirds—seriously, they can’t resist it—and also supports native bees and butterflies. Naturally found along streambanks and seeps, it’s an excellent choice for riparian gardens, rain gardens, or those tricky damp spots where other natives hesitate.
Cardinal Flower grows 2 to 4 feet tall with upright stems and lance-shaped leaves. From mid to late summer, it sends up dramatic flower spikes packed with intensely red, tubular blooms. It’s short-lived as a perennial but often reseeds in favorable conditions.
