California Coneflower | Rudbeckia californica seeds
In search of a California native that brings big pollinator energy and can hold its own in a damp meadow or rain garden? This coneflower’s got you covered—literally, it might tower over your tomatoes!
Rudbeckia californica, commonly known as California coneflower or California rudbeckia, is a tall (up to 6 ft), showy wildflower native to moist meadows and streambanks in the Sierra Nevada and other mountainous regions of California. A perennial member of the sunflower family, it thrives in rich, seasonally moist soils and adds a bold, architectural element to native gardens, rain gardens, and wildlife-friendly landscapes. Known for its large, bright yellow ray flowers and prominent greenish-brown central cones, this plant is a magnet for native bees and butterflies. Deer tend to leave it alone, making it a great choice for more vulnerable areas.
California coneflower grows from a spreading rhizome and reaches impressive heights when grown with ample water. It prefers full sun to part shade and is best suited for areas that receive consistent moisture in spring and early summer. Plant in groups or drifts for a striking late-summer display.
