Calico Monkeyflower

$5.00

Diplacus pictus is a rare and eye-catching annual wildflower known by the common name calico monkeyflower. Endemic to central California, particularly in the western Sierra Nevada foothills, it is typically found in grassy openings, rocky slopes, and thin soils over granite. Adapted to hot, dry summers and mild winters, it prefers full sun to part shade and well-draining soils. This small but showy plant makes a unique addition to native gardens, especially in naturalistic plantings or rock gardens. Sow in fall or early spring to mimic its natural germination cycle.
A true botanical gem, Diplacus pictus produces low-growing stems topped with large (comparing to the plant size), trumpet-shaped flowers that steal the spotlight. Each bloom is creamy white to pale lavender and boldly patterned with rich maroon-purple spots and streaks on the lower petals—giving it that distinctive “calico” look. Flowers are about 1 centimeter across and appear one at a time, but continuously through its bloom period.
While petite, this monkeyflower is a magnet for native pollinators, especially bees. It offers valuable early-season nectar in habitats where resources can be scarce. Though not typically used in cut arrangements due to its delicate stems, Diplacus pictus shines in-ground, where its detailed blooms can be admired up close. A must-have for rare plant lovers and wildflower enthusiasts alike.
