Buttercup | Ranunculus californicus seeds
Ranunculus californicus, commonly known as California Buttercup, is a cheerful and resilient perennial herb native to a wide range of California habitats, from coastal bluffs and foothills to grasslands and open woodlands. It is one of the earliest and most widespread bloomers in the state, bringing a bright splash of yellow to native gardens and wild spaces alike.
California Buttercup forms a low clump of glossy green, deeply lobed leaves and sends up slender flowering stems that typically reach 6 to 18 inches tall. From February through May, each stem is topped with 1 to several brilliant yellow, glossy flowers with 7 to 20 narrow petals. These nectar-rich blooms are highly attractive to native bees and other early-season pollinators.
This adaptable species prefers full sun to partial shade and does well in a variety of soils, including clay, loam, and sandy soils, as long as there is good drainage. It thrives in areas with wet winters and dry summers and will go dormant in the hottest part of the year. Ideal for naturalistic plantings, native borders, or as part of a wildflower meadow mix.
