Stunning, beautiful AND pollinator magnet! Mentzelia lindleyi, commonly known as Blazing Star or Golden Bartonia, is a striking annual wildflower native to California’s coastal ranges and Central Valley. This fast-growing plant thrives in dry, well-drained soils and full sun, making it ideal for native gardens, pollinator plantings, and drought-tolerant landscapes. It naturally occurs in grasslands, open slopes, and disturbed areas, where it brightens the scene with a burst of golden color.
The plant features branching stems and rough, sandpapery leaves, with vivid yellow, star-shaped flowers that bloom from late spring into summer. Each blossom spans 2–3 inches wide, with five delicate, slightly crinkled petals surrounding a cluster of showy stamens. These long-lasting blooms open in the afternoon and attract a wide range of pollinators, especially native bees and butterflies.
Mentzelia lindleyi adds brilliant contrast when sown with other California annuals like poppies and tidy tips. It performs best with minimal irrigation once established and thrives in hot, sunny sites with lean soils.
