Camissoniopsis cheiranthifolia ssp. cheiranthifolia is a low-growing perennial or occasionally annual herb known by the common names Beach Evening Primrose and Beach Suncup. Native to coastal California and southern Oregon, it occurs naturally on beaches, dunes, and other sandy areas, primarily north of Point Conception. Its spreading stems and deep taproot help it tolerate wind, shifting sand, salt spray, drought, and challenging coastal conditions.
The plant forms a broad groundcover of narrow gray-green leaves and cheerful four-petaled yellow flowers that gradually fade to orange or reddish tones. Blooming from spring through summer, it is especially attractive when planted in groups along slopes, sandy beds, and coastal gardens. It performs best in full sun near the coast and appreciates afternoon shade in hot inland locations. Provide sandy or gravelly, rapidly draining soil and only occasional water after establishment. Plants may reseed readily when growing conditions are favorable.
Sow in fall or winter in California. No pretreatment is required. Surface-sow the tiny seeds and press them gently into the soil without burying them deeply; light helps support successful germination.
