Tufted California Poppy | Eschscholzia caespitosa

$5.00

Eschscholzia caespitosa is a cheerful annual wildflower known by the common names foothill poppy and tufted poppy. Native to California and parts of the western U.S., it’s most commonly found in grasslands, open slopes, and lower mountain elevations. A close relative of the California poppy (Eschscholzia californica), this species stays more compact and tidy, making it perfect for smaller garden spaces, rock gardens, or wildflower borders. It thrives in full sun and well-draining soils and is especially suited for dry, low-maintenance landscapes.
This dainty annual forms low, mounded clumps of finely divided, bluish-green foliage. From spring through early summer, it sends up slender stems topped with bright golden-yellow poppy flowers, each about 2–3 centimeters across. Blooms open in the sun and close in the evening or on cloudy days, adding a dynamic, sunny rhythm to the garden.
Foothill Poppy is a favorite of native bees and beneficial insects, offering early-season pollen and nectar. Its compact size and abundant blooms make it a great companion for other small wildflowers or drought-tolerant groundcovers. Also suitable for container gardens and mass plantings. Though delicate in appearance, it’s tough, adaptable, and eager to reseed itself for future seasons.
