Sticky phacelia | Phacelia viscida

$5.00

Phacelia viscida is a striking annual wildflower known by the common names sticky phacelia and tacky phacelia. Native to California, it grows naturally in coastal sage scrub, chaparral, and sandy or rocky slopes, especially in Southern and Central California. Well adapted to dry, nutrient-poor soils, this hardy annual prefers full sun and is an excellent choice for native plant gardens, habitat restoration, or low-water landscapes. Tolerant of tough conditions and quick to bloom, it thrives with minimal care once established.
This upright, branching plant produces lush, leafy stems coated with glandular hairs that give it a sticky or “tacky” feel—hence the name. The real showstopper, though, is the flower: large, vivid blue-purple, funnel-shaped blooms with a bold violet center and prominent white stamens. Each flower measures about 2 to 3 centimeters wide and is borne in dense, coiled clusters at the tops of stems, creating a soft, fuzzy look from a distance.
Sticky Phacelia is a powerhouse pollinator plant. Its nectar-rich blooms attract native bees, honeybees, butterflies, and even hummingbirds. A key early-season resource for beneficial insects, it's a great companion in a wildlife-friendly garden. While not typically used for cut flowers, its dramatic form and bold color make it a standout in naturalized beds or wildflower meadows.
