$5.00

Allium unifolium is a California native perennial commonly known as One Leaf Onion or American Onion. It is native to the Coast Ranges and Sierra Nevada foothills of California, where it grows in grassy slopes, open woodlands, and meadows with seasonally moist soils. This species is prized for its tidy habit and striking spherical clusters of soft pink to lavender flowers that rise above slender stems in spring.
One Leaf Onion grows from a small bulb and typically produces a single flat, strap-like leaf, giving the plant its common name. Flower heads are composed of many star-shaped blossoms that attract native bees and other beneficial pollinators. After flowering, the plant goes dormant in summer, making it well suited to Mediterranean climates and water-wise gardens. It is an excellent choice for naturalistic plantings, meadow gardens, and native borders.
Prefers full sun to light shade and well-drained soils with winter moisture. Once established, it requires little to no supplemental summer water.
