Grand Collomia | Collomia grandiflora
Collomia grandiflora — commonly known as Large-flowered Collomia, Grand Collomia, or Mountain Trumpet — is an annual wildflower native to western North America, including California. Found in a wide variety of habitats such as open woodlands, sagebrush scrub, and rocky slopes, this adaptable species thrives in dry, well-drained soils and full sun conditions. It is particularly well-suited for native gardens, wildflower meadows, and restoration sites where it attracts native pollinators including bees and butterflies.
This upright annual grows from a slender taproot and typically reaches 1 to 3 feet in height. Its alternate leaves are narrow and lightly toothed, with a soft texture. The showy flowers appear in rounded terminal clusters, each bloom featuring five broad, trumpet-like petals in shades of soft peach, salmon, or apricot, with a delicate flush of pink or yellow near the throat. Blooming profusely from late spring through midsummer, it adds vibrant color to dry landscapes with minimal care.
Collomia grandiflora is an excellent choice for low-water landscapes and seed mixes intended to restore native diversity. It self-sows readily under suitable conditions.
