Black Sage | Salvia mellifera seeds
Salvia mellifera is a fragrant evergreen shrub known by the common name black sage. Native to California and Baja California, it thrives in coastal sage scrub and chaparral ecosystems. A cornerstone of Southern California native plant communities, black sage is a favorite among pollinators—especially bees and hummingbirds—and plays a crucial role in habitat restoration and wildlife gardens. This tough perennial is drought-tolerant once established and prefers dry, rocky, or well-draining soils in full sun. Its dark green, textured leaves are rich in essential oils and emit a strong, pleasant aroma when brushed. In spring, whorls of pale lavender to deep bluish flowers bloom along tall stalks, creating a striking contrast against its dark foliage. Sow directly in fall or cold stratify for spring sowing.
